Chromite forms in deep ultra-mafic magmas and is one of the first minerals to crystallize. It is because of this fact that chromite is found in some concentrated ore bodies. While the magma is slowly cooling inside the Earth's crust, chromite crystals are forming and, because of their density, fall to the bottom and are concentrated there.
Although its primary origin is ultra-mafic rocks such as peridotites, chromite is also found in metamorphic rocks such as serpentites. Chromite, as is indicated by its early crystallization, is resistant to the altering affects of high temperatures and pressures.
The principal uses of Chromite Ores is the making of the alloy ferro chrome. Ferro chrome. is used to manufacture Chrome, Chrome-nickel and Stainless Steels. The surge in the demand for stainless steel in the world, and especially in China, has led to a general shortage of Chromite Ore supplies. On a per ton basis, approximately 25% of the content of stainless steel is ferro chrome.
Ferro chrome. production for metallurgical application such as stainless steel, uses up to 90% of the world's chromite output. Chromite output worldwide is approximately 20 million MT per year.
The major producers of Chromite ores are South Africa (supplies approx 50% of world chromite ore), Kazakhstan, India, Turkey, Zimbabwe, Russia, Brazil, Australia, Iran and Oman. Hatton FZE Chromite Ores are primarily from Oman where we own a few quarries.
The Oman Chromite ores are mostly in the 30% to 36% of Cr2O3. Higher grades up to 46% Cr2O3 are available, but in smaller quantities. However, Oman Chromite's ores has the lowest market cost. Over 95% of Oman Chromite ores are shipped to China.
